A wonderful advantage of living in a smaller city is that one can go on a nature drive and still remain within the city limits. Rapid City has the advantage of having a wonderful scenic drive venue literally in the middle of town.
So-called Dakota Hogback separates Westside from the Eastside of town. Right along the summits of Dakota Hogback runs Skyline Drive. Apart from some large, pricey homes and the Dinosaur Park, Skyline Drive offers wonderful views of both the East and West sides of the city. Once you reach the highest point of the Drive, its name makes perfect sense as all you can see are pines and the big blue sky.
This is also a perfect spot for taking some scenic photos, especially if you have a handsome model like the one in the photo above. It helps if the model is well behaved as the slope behind the wall is quite steep, and tumbling down wouldn’t make for a pleasant experience.
The best part is that you can reach Skyline Drive from anywhere in greater Rapid City within 15-20 minutes tops, depending on traffic. So, even if you are visiting from out of town, you can definitely squeeze in some time to spend among the pines here.
